Lives Changed, Futures Built

Behind every statistic is a person whose life has been transformed. These are some of their stories.

South Sudanese children receiving education with USAID support

Mary's Journey to Becoming a Teacher

Mary Akech was one of the first girls to enroll in our primary school program in Bor. After years of walking six miles each way to attend classes, she graduated top of her class and earned a teaching certificate. Today, she teaches at the very school where her journey began, inspiring a new generation of young girls to pursue their education.

Clean Water Transforms Bor Community

Before our borehole project, families in the Bor riverside settlement relied on untreated river water, leading to frequent outbreaks of waterborne disease. Since the installation of three community wells, cases of cholera and dysentery have dropped by over 70 percent, and children who once missed weeks of school due to illness are now attending regularly.

First Generation of Graduates

In 2024, our Juba learning center celebrated its first graduating class of 42 students who completed their secondary school examinations. Many of these young people are the first in their families to finish formal schooling. Several have gone on to vocational training programs, and three have received scholarships to study at universities in Kampala and Nairobi.

Mobile Clinic Reaches Remote Villages

Our mobile health clinic travels to three remote villages along the White Nile that have no permanent medical facilities. Each month, the team of nurses and community health workers provides vaccinations, prenatal care, and basic medical treatment. In the past year alone, the clinic has conducted over 1,200 patient visits and provided prenatal care to more than 80 expecting mothers.

Women's Literacy Program Opens Doors

Nyamuoch Gai was 34 years old when she learned to read. Through our adult literacy program in Bor, she joined a cohort of 60 women who attend evening classes three times a week. Now able to read medical instructions, sign her children's school forms, and manage market transactions, Nyamuoch says she finally feels capable of shaping her family's future on her own terms.

Reducing Malaria in Juba County

Malaria remains the leading cause of death among children under five in South Sudan. Our prevention program has distributed over 2,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets, trained 45 community health volunteers, and established rapid diagnostic testing at three local clinics. In communities where the program operates, childhood malaria hospitalizations have decreased by nearly 40 percent since 2022.

What Our Community Says

The people we serve are the true measure of our work. Here are their words.

Before the foundation came to our village, I had given up hope that my daughters would ever go to school. Now both of them attend classes every day. My eldest wants to become a nurse. I never thought I would see this in my lifetime.

Achol Deng
Mother of two, Bor Community

The clean water well changed everything for us. My children are not getting sick like before. I used to spend three hours a day collecting water from the river. Now I use that time to work in my garden and earn money for my family.

Rebecca Malual
Community leader, Bor Riverside

When the mobile clinic visited our village for the first time, they discovered my son had a treatable heart condition. Without them, we would never have known. He received treatment in Juba and is now a healthy, active boy. I owe them his life.
